Asher is getting his first tooth! It hasn't broken the surface yet, but I can see the white bump pushing up and his gums are harder. How long do they take before they break through? I think it has really been bothering him because he has been a grumperpuss. Not to mention he is a drooling and chomping machine. I think in the last few days he has put EVERYTHING he can get his hand on into his mouth. In fact in one day he managed to chew (and sometimes swallow) on the grossest molidest aprciot you've ever seen (it was lying in the grass), several clumps of plaster, a tube of caulk (his favorite), a pencil, the dirt out of the houseplant, my shoe, some rocks, a leaf (which he gagged on and then threw up), and the leg of the dinning room chair! I think this chew-a-thon was the result of his new found crawling freedom, combined with the fact that chewing on anything makes his mouth feel better. Any suggestions for more sanitary things I can give him to help with the soreness?

If you can feel the swelling of the gums, it'll only be a few more days. I made momscicles with breastmilk for Margaret: cold and yummy!
I gave Coleman large pieces of apple. He loved that because it was flavorful and it must have felt good on his gums. He also gummed a watermelon rind for a while. But apples were his favorite. They were big enough he couldn't put the whole thing in his mouth, hard enough he never got any off but soft enough that he liked it. Just an idea.
They say a tooth takes three weeks to come out. Yeah, horrible. Colter got his first tooth at four months. It was a nightmare. I gave Colter chunks of apple to chew on... just keep an eye on them. There are teething biscuits, but I never tried them. Colter loved spatulas or spoons. Good luck... I hate teething.
James sometimes loves chewing on a cool, damp washcloth - he'll bite on it and then yank it out of his mouth - I guess it felt good! We've also tried those teething biscuits, although I'm not sure how much they helped, but he sure liked them and they sure made a mess! We also put his little water-filled teething rings in the fridge so then they're cold and feel good on his gums. Good luck! There is nothing like teething to throw off your whole sleeping schedule...I have a feeling James will be getting more teeth soon...
we did the apple thing too, and also stuck a wet wash cloth in the freezer for a bit and the cool hard wash cloth was good to chew on. claire also loved teething bicuits. good luck. the first two teeth are the worst and then (in my experience) the rest aren't so bad or painful...until k-9s which we were dealing with last week...
We got a toy with one end that is in the shape of a star and vibrates when bitten. I keep seeing it in grocery stores, Walgreens, etc. Jefferson loves to clamp down on that when he is teething - it definitely soothes. Other than that, we try a combination of Hyland's Teething Tablets, Baby Orajel, and Tylenol! Good luck!
