A Big Pile

Well Asher is pretty much potty trained. True, he still hasn't gotten the nack for going #2 in the potty yet, but he has only had about 3 accidents in the last two weeks, so I think that is pretty good.

As I traded out his stash of cloth diapers for his "big boy" underwear it got me wondering just how many diapers I'd actually taken on and off that little boy's bottom in the last two and half years.

Here is what I came up with...

He is two years and five months old= 883 days

On average he has used about 5 diapers a day since he was born
(He used ALOT more than that when he was an infant but tapered down to two or three at the end, so 5 a day is a pretty conservative average)

That means he has gone through at least 4,413 diapers.

The disposable diapers I buy cost about $11 a package and contain, on average, about 50 diapers.

This means if I'd used only disposable diapers for him I would have bought at least 89 packages of diapers and spent more than $971 in the last two and half years.

I took a minute to imagine what 4,413 diapers and $971 looks like.

That is one big pile of expensive poop.

And if I'd only been using disposables for Rose in a year and half that number would be double-- over 8,822 non-biodegradable diapers and about $2,000...
literally thrown in the garbage.

Just another reason I'm finding I love cloth diapers.

As someone who tried clothe diapers and was VERY overwhelmed by how time consuming it was (and expensive to get started) I have to say that the time I save is worth the money, for me at least. It's also worth it to not have to swish/squirt off poop. :) I am so glad you love it though!! I'm thinking of doing g diapers someday...if we're ever rich... :)

Oh, I totally understand that cloth diapers aren't for everyone but for me they really haven't been that time consuming... granted we do have TWO washers and dryers, which really helps. But Jon is really good about throwing a load in before he leaves in the morning and then I just finish them up throughout the day. And we have enough that we only have to wash them about every two days.

Our washing machines are also pretty good so we only have to rinse off the big chunky solids-- so most dirty diapers I can just throw right in the wash. So for ME it hasn't been too time consuming. Yet I realize that cloth diapers don't always fit into people's life styles or are too much of a burden.

It was just a shock to me to realize how MANY diapers my little boy had gone through! I think mom's should get a medal when there kids potty train! That is a lot of work.

At first I thought I would never want to do cloth diapers. My sister-in-law tried to get me to try them, but since we didn't have a washer and dryer in our apartment I just couldn't bring myself to try. Lately however, every time I take out a disgustingly full trash bag of diapers I can't help but imagine those diapers filling up landfills. It's really started to bug me how wasteful it seems, so maybe I'll be converted :).

Yay for potty trained kids! It's hard work but it is SO worth it!

I seriously wish I would have research cloth diapers more when pregnant with Allisen but just can't justify the expense now for just a few more months. Thanks for the information though. That is pretty crazy!
