Would your husband take your last name? Why not?

Actually he would, and we've talked about that before. :)

But I suppose out of what is clearly millennia of tradition, and in keeping with genealogy and... oh, I suppose church records (bah!), we stuck with the trend. I always wondered why it mattered so much. We've also considered hyphenating as a symbol of our equal partnership. (Bucking the antiquated patriarchal trend, as I am so wont to do in every facet of my existence. lol)

If we hyphenate the children's last name and they in turn couple up with likewise-named partners, what would they call themselves? And their children? Wouldn't prudence override the need to be so multiply identified?

Oh, the trouble. The drama! I still don't know if our motivation to keep things as they are is born of convenience, tradition or fear of retribution. Perhaps all three. "pshh. it's just easier this way." and so it came to be that we are the Maurers. and I'm totally cool with that. Maurers rock.

...So. The Barzillai line was "polluted" and unworthy to qualify for Priesthood, huh? Harsh. ;)
