The Smallest Egg

One of our ladies laid this little egg last week. The one on the right is a normal sized egg... and this is a normal sized quarter.

We haven't broken it open yet to see if it has little yolk inside of it yet, but weird... huh? I'd heard that the first egg a chicken lays is sometimes really small but all of our ladies have been laying eggs for at least three months. Maybe somebody was just tired and didn't want to give the egg laying thing their full effort?

In other chicken news...

... it is about time to start thinking about getting some new chicks. So wonderful. Babies are the best.

.... our rooster, Mr. Featherstone, is out to get me.

No really, he is.

Every time I walk out the chicken coop he follows me around... strutting. Then when I turn my back to him he runs at me and trys to peck my heels.

It hurts!

If I turn around and yell at him he puffs up his feathers and starts dancing around like he wants to fight me...

and lately...

don't think less of me

...I've taken to throwing rocks at him to keep him away or even giving him a good kick in the tummy when he comes at me.

It doesn't seem to phase him at all and he still tries to take me on.

I don't really know why.

He doesn't bother Jon at all.

I think it might be because I'm a woman...

and he thinks he can pull something over on me.

Ha. I don't he knows what kind of woman he is dealing with.

that's seriously hilarious about your rooster. I have a friend who played a game with his rooster "kick the rooster". I think it was a defensive tactic at first though because his rooster was extremely aggressive. I wish I lived near you because I think I would enjoy learning about having farm animals. you should get a sheep next. When we moved to tx i begged Rodney to get me a cow or sheep or something!!! (I can't even get a bunny---only because in the military all that traveling, etc.)

Love the chicken news... I may have some news of my own shortly :)

We had the same thing with some of our hens when we first got them, an occasional teeny tiny egg and sometimes the beast of all eggs... crazy. Don't know if you've ever looked at chicken guts when you're preparing them, but I had the opportunity with our recent incident, and all the yolks were just there waiting to be shelled up and laid. Like a weeks worth of varying sizes, and more really tiny ones too. Incredible!!

I hope you figure something out with the rooster. A friend of mine had a similar problem, and the rooster in question ended up as Sunday lunch. He kept attacking the kids, and my friend too. She reared a new rooster, and he was a lot more gentle and submissive, being hand-reared.

I don't think less of you :) He clearly knows who's the boss, and he's squaring up to you :D It's a compliment!!

Dear Heather Lynne Thomas New Last Name,

I fully support you in your efforts to keep your rooster from carrying out what I can only assume must be a truly devious master plan. I myself once ninja-kicked a turkey that was trying to kill me. It's people vs. poultry. And I'm glad you are on MY side.

Also, where have you been all my life?

Love,

STAR

Hahaha Heather, your rooster in that picture looks like the "chicken hawk" that foghorn leghorn has to deal with :) He has a bit of an attitude

I want you to hatch it. Could you imagine the tiniest chick coming from that? Wonderful.

I have to admit that makes me giggle a little thinking of the rooster trying to attack you :). So I am curious was the yoke little too?

Hee hee. I love the image of you taking on the rooster with rocks and kicks. Sounds like he's quite the character. I'd love to meet him this summer. :-)
