Why Rake Leaves?

I don't get it.

Why do people rake up leaves?

It seems like a complete waste of time to me.

If you just leave them on the ground they will compost over the winter and they will magically be gone by the time spring rolls around.

So why go through all the hassle of raking them up?

I have a theory.

This is it:

Once long ago people raked up their leaves because they wanted them for their compost piles. Eventually people stopped making compost piles, but because all their life they had seen people raking up leaves they thought that you were suppose to do it... so they did.
I haven't raked any of the leaves in our yard. I probably won't.

Unless of course we decide to jump in them... then it might be worth the work.

I love living in a place that looks like this in the fall. So pretty.

The absolute, only reason to rake up leaves is to jump in them.

Actually I am pretty sure you have to rake up leaves because they don't create compost under the snow. They actually freeze and make the grass and leaves into a dead and decomposing sort of mess by the time things start thawing out. I'd check on it because I have a feeling you don't want dead grass.

Heather, I am glad you are enjoying the seasons since we have none here in Riverside!

I'm going to review the book I mentioned on goodreads so I can explain more about the slowness of it :)

If you don't rake up the leaves then they will create a barrier between the grass and the water and your grass will all be dead by the time spring rolls around. Leaves don't break down very easily because they have no moisture in them. So...if you want to have pretty grass in the spring then I suggest raking up your leaves. They also allow many many yucky bugs to find nice warm homes for the winter since there is such a barrier created.

This is all the reason I need to leave mine unraked ;)

Yes,I know from personal experience that Drew and Jessica are right. I don't enjoy raking leaves, but you have to do it or you end up with a yucky mess in the spring (and dead grass underneath it) and then you have to try to rake up the mess. Not at all fun. Doing it once makes you into a dedicated leaf raker, and also Asher needs a big pile to jump in.

Lance pointed out another drawback of leaving the leaves: they make your snowmen very dirty and ugly (although you may get enough snow in Logan that you never reach the bottom when making your snowmen).
