Wednesday's Woman

The First Sorrow of Mary

Luke 2: 21-35

Why was a woman considered unclean physically and spiritually after giving life to a child-- 40 days if it was a boy and twice that long, 80 days, if it was a girl (Lev. 12)? And why was it necessary for a woman to make a sin offering as an atonement after giving life?

You know, I've thought about this before, and I don't know about the sin offering, but I've thought about the implications of being unclean for at least 40 days after giving birth, and in some ways, it seems like such a blessing from the Lord! During that time she wasn't supposed to cook or clean, or do anything else. She was simply taken care of and allowed to have time to recuperate and spend time with her new born. In some ways I really think this was a way of Heavenly Father showing mercy to his daughters who brought children into the world.
